LIBERATED VIETNAMESE TURN TO RELIGION
Hanoi, Vietnam natsot Duration: 2.10
A growing number of people in Vietnam are turning towards religion as the country's economy embraces capitalism and brings huge social changes. Church and temple attendance have risen and one religion in particular is becoming very popular. Caodaism, an indigenous faith influenced by both Eastern and Western religious traditions, is
enjoying unusual popularity among the Vietnamese because of its
mix of Buddhist, Taoist and Christian thought. Founded in 1926, its first followers were Vietnamese members of the French colonial government. But throughout Vietnam's colonial and post-colonial history, Caodaism was criticised by nationalists and communists for its foreign nature. Recently, however, it has gained acceptance among young and old as a method of dealing with modern-day life. Its rituals incorporate several aspects of the world's major religions, including Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.
