There lived a woodcutter in a small village. He was so poor that his pockets were always empty, but his heart was very honest. Every day he went to the forest, cut wood, and returned home humming songs.
One day, while cutting a tree near the river, splash! his axe fell into the water. The woodcutter cried out, “Oh no! My axe is gone! Now my wife will say I talk more than I work.”
He sat by the river and started crying. Just then, a goddess appeared from the river and asked, “Why are you crying?”
The woodcutter replied, “Goddess, my axe fell into the river. How will I work now?”
The goddess smiled and showed him a golden axe. “Is this yours?”
The woodcutter opened his eyes wide and said, “That’s too expensive to be mine!”
Then she showed a silver axe.
The woodcutter quickly said, “No, Goddess, that’s not mine either. I’m a simple man.”
Finally, the goddess showed an iron axe.
The woodcutter shouted happily, “Yes! That’s mine! That’s the one that breaks my back every day!”
The goddess laughed loudly and said, “Honesty like this is rare these days.”
She rewarded him with all three axes.
The woodcutter went home happily and said, “Today, telling the truth came with a bonus!”
