Francesco M. Manfredini – Concerto for Two Trumpets, String Orchestra and Basso Continuo in D major

Описание: Francesco Maria Manfredini, born and died in Pistoia, must be counted among the Bolognese composers. He was shaped musically in Bologna, where he studied violin with Giuseppe Torelli and composition with Giacomo Antonio Perti. In 1704, Manfredini was appointed a chapel musician at San Petronio and became a member of the Accademia Filarmonica. Later he served at the Bavarian court, and from 1727 until his death, he was music director at the cathedral of San Filippo in his hometown.

His output includes several oratorios, collections of church symphonies and trio sonatas; the most valuable are undoubtedly his concerti, especially the Christmas Concerto from Opus 3. The concerto presented here, titled "Concerto con una o due Trombe..." in a manuscript dated 1711, is structurally a Concerto grosso: a solo string concertino engages in a dialogue designed for contrast with the ripieno group. In the fast outer movements, one or – if available – two trumpets are added to either reinforce certain tutti effects or to assume soloistic roles themselves. Their function is akin to a "counter-concertino."

Structurally, this piece can be compared to a later group concerto. The frequent unison passages, such as in the ritornello of the first movement (but also in other works by the composer), show that Manfredini's musical language was also influenced by the "Venetian idiom."
