Why are mills closing in British Columbia when the landscape still looks green? One of the most common arguments in the forestry debate is:
“If there are trees everywhere, there must be plenty of timber.” But seeing trees is not the same as having merchantable timber - the kind of wood that can actually run a sawmill.
In this video we break down the first major myth driving the BC forestry debate and show what’s really happening on the landscape:
• why much of the “working forest” is now young plantations
• why large areas of forest can’t be logged economically
• how government timber supply estimates became inflated
• why mills are closing even though the landscape still looks green
