France Student Protests Escalate: Paris Schools Hit by Blockades, Clashes and Arrests

Описание: France is facing a rapidly spreading wave of high school student protests, with demonstrations that began in the Paris region now affecting schools across the country. Students are protesting overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, deteriorating school buildings, inadequate resources and long school hours. What started as school blockades has escalated in some locations into clashes with police, fires and property damage.

Around 400 schools were expected to remain closed on October 2 as authorities struggled to contain the unrest. French officials have reported thousands of arrests since the protests began, while dozens of students and education workers have been injured. Some demonstrations in Paris, Marseille, Strasbourg, Rennes and other cities have involved tear gas, projectiles and confrontations with riot police.

The French government has convened crisis meetings and called for schools affected by blockades to use remote learning where necessary. At the same time, authorities are investigating allegations of excessive police force. Claims by government officials that political groups helped organize or inflame the movement have been rejected by France Unbowed representatives, adding another layer to the political dispute.

The protests are also becoming a major issue ahead of France's 2027 presidential election, placing education, government spending and public order at the center of political debate.
