It is important for me to count actual objects like pigs, cows, rocks, etc. because gender is coded in numbers 1-3.
If you are simply listing the numbers in the abstract, what gender do you use? Masculine to agree with 'numerus' (ūnus, duo, trēs)? Or Neuter as a neutral place-holder (ūnum, duo, tria)? Or do you say the first three numbers in all three forms (ūnus-ūna-ūnum, duo-duae-duo, trēs-trēs-tria)? Comment down below your strategy for saying sequences of numbers with learners.
For me, the best practice is to ground the numbers in reality by counting what exists in the world, and adapting to the gender of the actual things being counted.
