Due to request, I am documenting the take-apart process and simple repair of a component on the SDSV. Repair is on the Bass drum module in particular, where I had replaced a transistor in the noise circuit after the output was crackling. The new tranny is compatible but doesn't sound as good. I did a Mouser order and got the right parts, plus the common IC op-amps that failed on the first Tom Tom card. Want to keep this stuff on hand.
For tools I am using a Weller WES51 station and a Hakko FP-300 desoldering gun. The Hakko is a serious lifesaver when it comes to desoldering anything, especially delicate chips, and it's so fast. I find it very important to have good tools when doing electronic work otherwise you can suffer mightily.
When this repair was over, I had replaced TR6 (2N5172) in the Bass, Snare and Tom Toms, and re-capped the electrolytics (4.7uf and 2.2uf, 63v) in all but the hi-hat module, as it was harder to get to because of the eprom module soldered over the top. No real difference by doing the caps but on a 35 year-old piece of equipment, doing this is almost a necessity. I will eventually re-cap the power supply and backplane but because of the way it is mounted/riveted/soldered, I'm going to save that for when it's absolutely necessary.
*I removed the sound and added text. You don't wanna hear me yapping...*
