Message: True Freedom Is Found in Christ Jesus
Memory verse: John 8:36 KJV [36] If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Freedom is one of the most desired things in the world. People want financial freedom, emotional freedom, political freedom, freedom of speech. But Jesus was talking about something deeper — spiritual freedom.
In John 8, Jesus was speaking to people who thought they were already free because they were descendants of Abraham. But Jesus revealed something powerful:
John 8:34 KJV [34] Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
That means sin enslaves. It binds. It controls. It limits. And then comes the promise in verse 36 — not political freedom, not social freedom — but freedom of the soul.
1. Freedom Is Not a Feeling — It’s a Person
Jesus didn’t say, “If you try harder, you will be free.” He didn’t say, “If religion makes you better, you will be free.”
He said:
“If the Son… shall make you free…”
Freedom is not self-made. Freedom is not earned. Freedom is given by the Son — Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV [17] Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
Where Jesus reigns, chains break.
2. Sin Is a Master, But Jesus Is a Deliverer
Many people don’t realize they are bound.
Addictions. Anger. Fear. Bitterness. Secret habits. Generational patterns.
But Jesus came with a mission:
Luke 4:18 KJV [18] The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised,
Notice the word — captives.
You cannot set free someone who is already free. Jesus came because humanity needed deliverance.
3. “Free Indeed” Means Completely Free
Not half-free. Not temporarily free. Not emotionally free but spiritually bound.
The Bible says:
“…ye shall be free indeed.”
That word indeed means truly, certainly, unquestionably.
When Jesus sets you free:
Guilt loses its grip.
Shame loses its voice.
The past loses its power.
The devil loses his legal ground.
Romans 8:1 KJV [1] There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
That’s real freedom.
4. Freedom Requires Abiding in Christ
Earlier in the chapter, Jesus said:
John 8:31-32 KJV [31] Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; [32] and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Freedom is maintained by staying in His Word. Truth breaks lies. Light drives out darkness. Obedience sustains liberty.
You cannot walk in freedom while feeding the very chains that once bound you.
5. What Does This Freedom Look Like?
Freedom to worship without fear
Freedom from the control of sin
Freedom from condemnation
Freedom from the fear of death
Freedom to become who God created you to be
Galatians 5:1 KJV [1] Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Freedom must be guarded. It must be valued. It must not be traded for temporary pleasure.
Conclusion
The world says, “Be yourself.” Jesus says, “Come to Me.”
The world says, “Do what feels good.” Jesus says, “Follow Me.”
The world offers escape. Jesus offers deliverance.
And the promise still stands today:
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
