Welcome to our Spotlight Sessions, a series dedicated to conversations with change-makers and people that have made an impact on the community of people with disabilities.
In this episode, we had the opportunity to speak with Rachelle Barnett, Head of Fundraising and Communications at the Halow Project, a nonprofit that supports adults with learning disabilities and autism across Surrey, UK. Halow Project organizes social activities as well as work-like experiences and supplies community-based learning and life skills training for our young people.
Rachelle shared thoughts on the following topics:
1. The history of the organization and it’s community-oriented approach.
2. Various programming initiatives and how they create value for Halow members.
3. Demystifying learning disabilities by creating a community presence and having a growing representation in the media.
4. Engaging people with disabilities about their interests rather than assuming for them
