Last weekend, I decided to go back to my old elementary school – a place that reminds me of the simplest years of my life, of recess games, candies from my bag, and endless conversations with friends. When I reached the school gate, everything seemed smaller than I remembered: the little playground in front of the building, the old tennis net, and even the trees that once grew around the square, now looking a bit older but still sprawling.
I walked up to the entrance, and the caretaker, Mr. Janusz – who was already working there when I was a student – recognized me right away. “Janek! How you’ve grown!” he said, opening the gate. “I came for a bit of nostalgia,” I replied, and he smiled: “Come in, the school’s open, just watch out for the kids during recess.” I stepped inside, and the smell of paint, erasers, and paper wrapped around me instantly – the same smell that reminds me of the first days of school.
Walking down the corridors, I met a group of kids in uniforms – small, energetic, with backpacks on their shoulders, running to their classrooms. Seeing them, I immediately thought of Pawel – my best friend from third grade. Pawel and I spent every recess playing ball, pretending to be footballers, and after school, we walked home together, sharing the candies our moms had given us for breakfast.
I walked up to my old classroom – Room 3, on the first floor, with windows facing the playground. The door was slightly open, and inside, a teacher was giving a math lesson. Through the gap, I saw the old wooden desks, the chalkboard, and even that same old clock on the wall that used to be a few minutes slow. Then suddenly, I heard a voice from behind: “Excuse me, are you from here?”
I turned around and saw three kids – two boys and a girl – standing next to me, looking curiously at my bag and shoes (I was dressed for work, while they were in uniforms). “I’m an old student of this school,” I explained. “I used to sit in the same classroom as you.”
The kids immediately perked up, asking me what it was like to study here back then, if we had the same lessons, and if I knew their teacher. “Did you have a friend to play with?” asked a little blonde boy who reminded me of Pawel. “Yes, I did,” I replied, smiling. “Pawel and I played ball on this playground, and after recess, we’d walk to class together.”
Just then, the bell rang – recess was over. The kids hurried to class, but one of them, the boy who’d asked about my friend, stopped and looked at me. I automatically asked, without thinking: And which class are you going to now? 😅 The boy smiled and replied: “Third grade! They say it’s the best class in the school!” – exactly what Pawel and I used to say.
After leaving the school, I sat on a bench by the playground, watching the kids run and laugh. I remembered how Pawel and I used to rush to third grade after recess, talking about games and candies, dreaming about what we’d be when we grew up. Time flies fast, but some moments stay with us forever. And you – have you ever gone back to your old school? And which class are you going to now? 😅
