Why did America choose the Bald Eagle as its national symbol? 🦅
In 1782, the young United States adopted the eagle for the Great Seal of the United States, representing strength, courage, and independence.
But the story behind this iconic bird is more surprising than most people realize.
• The seal contains 13 arrows, 13 olive leaves, and 13 olives, representing the original states.
• The word “bald” comes from the old English word “piebald,” meaning white-headed.
• The species is native only to North America.
• And one Founding Father—Benjamin Franklin—famously suggested the turkey would be a better national bird.
Even more remarkable, America’s national bird nearly vanished in the 1960s before making one of the greatest wildlife recoveries in history.
From debated symbol…
to near extinction…
to soaring again.
