Recent research published in the International Journal of Molecular Science shows that high insulin levels, or hyperinsulinemia, resulting from a Western diet and over-nutrition, has a pivotal role in the development of metabolic syndrome, T2D, cardiovascular disease and premature mortality and recommends interventions that reduce insulin levels to slow down age-related physiological decline and prevent these diseases.
Within this population, up to 20% of women of reproductive age have a hyperinsulinemia condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS. Many times, women are unaware they have this condition until they face difficulties getting pregnant and discover that their hormones are not functioning as they should.
Our special guest today is Ali Chappell, Founder of Lilli Health. Ali is a Registered Dietitian with a Master of Science and PhD in nutrition and metabolism, specializing in reproductive endocrinology. She has also completed a National Institutes of Health-funded postdoctoral research fellowship focusing on nutrition, insulin resistance and PCOS. As a woman with PCOS, Ali has spent her career researching the benefits of a low-insulin lifestyle for PCOS patients. Through her book, Low Insulin Lifestyle, and the Lilli Health website, she is delivering her research into the hands of patients through science-based and evidence-backed education and tools to help empower women with PCOS on their journey to improved health and well-being.
Today we are going to focus on new research around hyperinsulinemia and helping women with PCOS better manage their condition through a low insulin lifestyle. Results of the low insulin lifestyle studied in PCOS patients over months months include:
• 53% reduction in fasting insulin
• 19 lb weight loss
• 23% reduction in free testosterone
