AMD FSR Redstone is AMD's December 2025 graphics technology suite that represents a major leap forward in gaming performance. Think of it as AMD's comprehensive answer to NVIDIA's DLSS ecosystem - it's a collection of four interconnected technologies all powered by machine learning to make games run faster and look better.
FSR Upscaling (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4) 🎮
This is the core technology that started it all. FSR Upscaling is a machine learning-powered super-resolution technique that renders your game at a lower resolution (like 1080p) and then intelligently reconstructs it to a higher resolution (like 4K). The magic happens through neural networks that analyze the image and fill in the missing details, making it look nearly identical to native resolution while delivering significantly better performance. FSR 4 specifically refers to this upscaling component within the Redstone suite - it's the same technology, just the latest generation.
FSR Frame Generation 🎬
Frame Generation comes in two flavors, and this is where things get really interesting:
FSR Frame Generation (ML Mode) - This is the cutting-edge version that uses a neural network model to predict and create entirely new frames between existing ones. It analyzes the previous frame, current frame, depth information, and motion vectors to intelligently generate intermediate frames. Imagine your game rendering 60 frames per second, and this technology inserting additional frames to make it feel like 120 FPS.
FSR Frame Generation (Analytical Mode) - This is the older, more traditional approach using heuristic interpolation algorithms rather than machine learning. It's less sophisticated but serves as a backward-compatibility option for GPUs that don't have the horsepower for ML processing.
FSR Ray Regeneration ✨
Ray tracing is gorgeous but computationally expensive, so games often use "undersampled" ray-traced lighting (fewer rays to save performance). FSR Ray Regeneration is an ML-based cleanup technology that takes this noisy, undersampled ray-traced lighting data and intelligently fills in the gaps, making it look like you're using full-quality ray tracing without the massive performance hit.
FSR Radiance Caching 💡
Path-traced indirect lighting (where light bounces realistically around scenes) is incredibly demanding. FSR Radiance Caching uses neural network-based caching to remember and reuse lighting calculations, dramatically accelerating these complex path-traced lighting scenarios. Instead of recalculating every light bounce every frame, it intelligently caches and reuses data where appropriate.

This was an important stepping stone released before Redstone. FSR 3.1 added camera parameter support specifically to enable better integration of ML-based frame generation. It laid the groundwork for the more advanced ML features that would come with Redstone.
