To change the batteries you need to have a Phillips head screw driver and two AAA batteries. These trains can use a lot of batteries so I switched to rechargeable batteries to save myself some money in the long run and to always have batteries on hand. I've linked the ones I use below.

Turn the train over and unscrew the Phillips head screw towards the front of the train first. This will release the plastic body and allow you to slide it off. Replace both batteries underneath with new rechargeable batteries and test to make sure the wheels turn and your batteries are seated properly. When sliding the body back on be sure to locate the plastic notch cut out towards the rear of the body and slide that over the plastic piece on the motor first then push the body back down until it is seated. After that you can tighten the Phillips head screw back up and you are all set.
