Sprain:
A sprain refers to an injury to a ligament, which is the fibrous tissue that connects bones to other bones at a joint. Sprains typically occur when the joint is forced into an unnatural position, causing the ligament to stretch or tear. Common symptoms of a sprain include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the affected joint. Depending on the severity of the sprain, treatment may involve rest, ice application, compression, elevation (RICE method), and sometimes physical therapy to regain strength and range of motion.
Strain:
A strain refers to an injury to a muscle or tendon, which is the fibrous tissue that connects muscles to bones. Strains usually occur when a muscle is overstretched or torn. They can happen suddenly or develop over time due to repetitive motion or overuse. Symptoms of a strain include pain, muscle spasm, swelling, weakness, and limited ability to move the affected muscle or joint. Treatment for strains typically involves rest, ice application, compression, and elevation (similar to sprains). Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises may also be recommended to promote healing and prevent further injury.
