On February 12, 2026, The Ursuline School’s Black Essence Club hosted a powerful, student-led Black History Month celebration for the school community.
Designed and organized entirely by students, the program featured moving performances that highlighted the impact of Black artists and voices. The morning opened with Maya Joseph ’26 singing the Black National Anthem, followed by Savannah Minter ’27’s recitation of “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. Japhia Alexander ’30 performed a violin solo, and Hannah Tang ’27 brought energy to the stage with “Home” from The Wiz.
Club co-presidents Imani Harris ’26 and Ilyasah Odindo ’26 shaped this year’s program around student performance and creative expression, responding to feedback that peers connect most deeply when students lead the stage.
Founded in 1973, the Black Essence Club, Ursuline’s oldest student organization, continues its 52-year legacy of celebrating achievement, building community, and elevating student voice.
