John Lau Guitars have very kindly loaned me a couple of prototype guitars to evaluate and give feedback on. John dropped them off today and I could resist doing another run through of today's tarck using one of them.
These are so pre-prod that they don't have names yet, and this one has an experimental finish that I'll call Cold Fire.
Anyhow, I am running it straight through my Ceriatone OTS 20 Mini, initially the clean channel, then I add the additional gain stage and finally the drive channel without the additonal gain stage.
The guitar has two single coil sized rail humbuckers in the neck and middle, and mini switches that select the following, that is if I recall John's pre-flight briefing correctly:
Neck pickup coils series/parallel
Whether the neck & middle combination voices the inner or outer coils od the two pickups, and whether the bridge & middle switch position actually voices that, or all 3 pickups at once.
Bridge pickup coils series/parallel.
In addition to this there is a preamp that allows up to 5dB of boost, and that also increases the output impedence of the guitar as the boost level increases.
Anyhow, in homage to my "option paralysis" video (in which I got lost in my Sehgold Masquerader's comparatively simple swicthing systsm), I spend the first half of this video blundering through the switch combinations: For the first three minutes I use the guitar in "passive" mode.
Then I switch on the preamp and use the addiitonal gain stage in the Ceriatone's clean channel.
Finally I max out the preamp boost and hit the amp drive channel.
This was recorded at almost domestic TV volume and the guitar was recorded via a close mic on the speaker & a non cab simulated DI from a speaker attenuator. So the fact that I am getting second harmonic feedback in places is an attestation to how much gain was involved at times.
