In 1943, in the supposedly idyllic paradise of the Bahamas, one of the wealthiest men in the world was brutally murdered. Sir Harry Oakes, a self-made billionaire who struck gold, was found bludgeoned and burned in his bed. The crime scene was bizarre, covered in feathers from a torn pillow, in what seemed like a strange, ritualistic killing.
The investigation was immediately taken over by the island's governor, the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII of Great Britain. Within just two days, the duke pointed the finger at one man: Sir Harry's own son-in-law, Alfred de Marigny. The motive seemed clear: de Marigny stood to inherit a fortune.
But was it that simple? The evidence against de Marigny was flimsy, and many believed he was being framed to protect a more powerful, more sinister culprit. Was the Duke himself involved in a cover-up? What secrets did the rich and powerful of the Bahamas want to keep buried?
Join us as we investigate a classic "whodunnit" mystery, filled with immense wealth, powerful figures, a flawed investigation, and a murder that remains officially unsolved to this day.
