Four quarters of growth… but is South Africa really better off?

While this is technically correct, the discussion highlights an important analytical distinction: financial markets are not the same as the real economy.

In 2025, financial indicators have been notably strong. The JSE reached record highs, the rand appreciated, and gold prices remained elevated. These developments point to improved investor sentiment and favourable global conditions. However, financial market performance does not automatically translate into broad-based economic resilience.

Beneath the surface, several sectors continue to face structural constraints. Parts of the real economy remain under pressure, including industries affected by global trade tensions, cost challenges and intensified import competition. Growth in headline GDP figures should therefore be interpreted with caution.

The episode also considers the role of structural reform — including network industry reform, improved service delivery and greater private sector participation — in building sustained business confidence, investment and long-term economic growth.
