When anyone exceeds this age, they suddenly turn to dust, with no chance of escape or place to escape—their fate is complete obliteration.

What's worse? The countdown never stops. Year after year, the target ages get smaller and smaller. As this curse persists, no one is safe. Therefore, the residents of Lumière are forced to send a volunteer expedition each year, consisting of people who have only one year left to live. This mission requires them to track down the Painter, cross the sea, reach her residence, and kill her before she can write another number, claiming more lives.
