Langre is an ancient Andomatunnum or Civitas lingorum. In the Middle Ages he had his own counts. The episcopal see was located in Langres: the Bishop-Duke of Langres was one of the six ecclesiastical peers of France.
Near Langres in the Middle Ages there was the county of Bassigny.
Under Louis VII he was elevated to a dukedom. In 1362 it was fortified due to the war with the British. At one time it was a first-class fortress.
