Karla Sofía Gascón, “Emilia Pérez” Trans Actress, Exposed For Racist Tweets

But her nomination has faced huge backlash after a journalist uncovered several of Gascon's racist and Islamophobic tweets.

On Jan. 30, journalist Sarah Hagi posted several screenshots of tweets by Gascón from 2016 to 2023, when the actress made multiple Islamophobic and racist comments.

Hagi’s revelations prompted other journalists and people online to further investigate Gascón’s X account.

People found Gascón had described George Floyd, a Black man who was murdered by a white police officer, as a “drug addict and a hustler”.

Tweets also revealed she shared [racist misinformation on the COVID-19 vaccines and was racist towards Asians

After her racist behavior was exposed, Gascón deactivated her X account on Thursday, Jan 30, calling it “misinformation”.

In a post on Instagram on Feb. 1, she said that she cannot fix her past acts from 10 or 20 years ago, even though most of the tweets were posted between 2019 and 2024.

During an exclusive, hour-long interview with CNN, Gascón later apologized while also defended herself, saying she isn’t the racist person many have made her out to be.

Gascón also said she wouldn’t have worked with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña, two of her co-stars, if she was racist.

Gascón said the George Floyd tweets were “taken out of context” and “manipulated”, adding that barely any people interacted with her post, so it was impossible for her to have any kind of influence.

She said she often uses “irony” and writes in the “point of view of a third person who thinks negatively”.

Hagi told Variety she didn't feel Gascón gave a proper apology, failed to address the marginalized groups she targeted and didn’t acknowledge the harm she caused.

Hagi added the film “Emilia Pérez” cannot be promoted as “important” and “historical” for its 13 Oscar nominations while its leading actress straight up made racist remarks.

Netflix, which is in charge of distribution of “Emilia Pérez”, has since distanced itself from Gascón.

Netflix now only communicates to Gascon through her agent and won’t pay for her transportation and accommodation to upcoming US award shows, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
