A return to multiparty politics in Uganda 20 years ago was not guaranteed. It was a prolonged struggle that was initially lost in the Constituent Assembly, which voted to extend the Movement System for another 10 years. Some political players, who were removed from the cabinet and never reinstated, believe that the eventual decision to allow political parties was influenced by the dissatisfaction of dissenting voices within the Movement System. In this narrative of the 1995 Constitution at 30, we highlight the step-by-step battle that reinstated political parties.
