The South Eastern Main Line reached Folkestone in 1843 however at the time being east side of Folkestone itself.

It would be later being renamed numerous times from Folkestone to names such as Folkestone Junction and Folkestone East which at the time handled most of the boat traffic from nearby Folkestone Harbour

The last time it got renamed to Folkestone East was in 1962 however due to declining traffic that station would close in 1965

Folkestone West was the next station to open in 1863 opening as Shorncliffe Camp which was renamed in 1926 to Shorncliffe before becoming Folkestone West in 1962

As for the present station of Folkestone Central itself it was the later of the 3 on the Southeastern Main Line opening as Cheriton Arch in 1884 before renaming Rednor Park in 1886 and then finally becoming Folkestone Central in June 1895.

Today there are only 2 Platforms being on a Island Platform although at one time there was up to 4 platforms.

The present layout dates from a rebuild in 1961 at the time of electrification of the 750 volt DC 3rd System which the station had two island platforms being connected by subway links from Cheriton Road.

The South Island Platform was taken out of use in 1999

On December 24th 2015 the line between Folkestone Central and Dover Priory was closed after the Sea Wall on the Dover Side of Shakespeare Cliff Tunnel was damaged during a storm which led to a sinkhole appearing.

However it turned out on further inspection the real reason was that the original sea wall originally built on a Wooden Bridge had worn away so badly. The damage was so bad the whole section had to be completely replaced with concrete in similar ways to when the Dawlish Sea Wall was breached in February 2014

It was predicted to take a year to complete however surprisingly the process took only 9 months to complete and the line through to Dover Priory was reopened on September 5th 2016.
At the time of filming Southeastern services were provided by Hourly High Speed services to and from Ramsgate via Sandwich to St Pancras International which since December 2009 were operated by Class 395 Javelins which were due to undergo a mid life refurbishment

The other London bound services to London Charing Cross via Tonbridge and Sevenoaks are operated by Class 375 Electrostars
