Men Rescued from San Joaquin River
Earlier this morning, deputies with the Air Support Unit were training when they were asked to assist with a water rescue. Two men were reported to be stuck in the San Joaquin River after they were involved in a car accident. Given their distance from the shoreline, emergency personnel were unable to get to them from land. While the fire department was responding with a boat to attempt a rescue by water, Pilot Anthony Winstead and Tactical Flight Officer Andrew Nikkel launched Air101 from the Modesto Airport. When they arrived, the deputies confirmed two people in the water holding onto a downed tree. The men having already been in the cold water for at least 15 minutes and still waiting for a boat to arrive, the deputies decided to long line TFO Nikkel from 100 feet above the water to help the men. He successfully rescued one of the victims to the shore, where fire and ambulance personnel were waiting. During that time, a boat arrived and saved the other man still in the water.
