Former Vice President of Zambia, Nevers Mumba, said, "They wanted to be rich, and that's not what Nujoma and his colleagues did; they pushed for us to get educated, they pushed for us for free education, and they pushed us to succeed like a father in a home that would give his last penny to his son to be able to look after himself at his own expense. I pray that God gives us leaders like that to move forward."

He symbolised protection, direction and resolve as Namibia learnt to govern itself.

His sense of guidance continues to be felt across generations, says eldest son Utoni Nujoma.

"We have had and found solace in the inspiration to carry his torch forward, ensuring that the light he brought into our lives continued to shine brightly forever in our collective memories. As we continue to celebrate his greatness, kindness, humility, and above all, the extraordinary legacy he left behind, his physical absence from our family continues to be the most difficult part. But with the support of the Namibian nation, we have been able to move on from this painful past."

Family member David Nujoma recalls a visionary that was defined by discipline, vision and unwavering commitment to freedom.

As Namibia marks the first anniversary of Nujoma's passing, he is remembered as the Father of the Nation, a liberation icon and founding president whose vision gave birth to the country and continues to guide it forward.
