With the rapid rise of generative AI and the misuse of images, the media industry must certify the origins of the images it publishes. To tackle this challenge, AFP has developed a proof of concept during the US 2024 elections aiming to convince industry players to move forward in a unified direction.

Our POC is a four-step process:
1) Image Capture : A C2PA-compatible camera embeds a digital signature into a secure C2PA certificate at the moment of capture

2) Secure Storage and Editing : Secure Storage and Editing: The original file uploads to a secure server, where it is stored and duplicated. The duplicate then undergoes AFP’s standard editorial workflows.

3) Invisible Watermarking : Before distribution, the edited photo receives an encrypted, invisible watermark unique to each image, embedding a digital fingerprint.

4) Verification : Using the widely adopted Chrome extension "WeVerify Plugin”. anyone can decode this watermark and trace it back to the stored original file, much like examining a film negative.

This proof of concept, combined with four years of experience digitally tagging photos with IMATAG, confirmed we are on the right track to offer our audience a way to verify the authenticity and the provenance of news images.
