HMS Dasher had not been built for the Royal Navy, and her sailors felt it every day.
They walked under bulkheads that groaned with each change of speed. In the engine room, men worked stripped to their undershirts, wiping sweat from their faces as heat pressed through the steel. Fuel seeped from valves that never sealed, leaving the decks slick and the air heavy with fumes.
Above them, a wooden flight deck stretched the length of the ship, barely wide enough for a single landing. Sea Hurricanes came in fast, wheels slamming onto planks that flexed with each impact.
But by March 1943, with U-boats tearing through Allied convoys, every vessel that could launch a fighter was needed at sea.
The Admiralty sent Dasher out again, and deep within its hull, a threat far deadlier than any German torpedo was already stirring to life.
