Cable Tray Systems - What Are The Different Types?
CABLE TRAY SYSTEM
A Cable tray system is a full solution of tray for a commercial low voltage or data center installations. What makes a cable tray system and how do how do you build out a cable tray system?
In the electrical wiring of buildings, a cable tray system is used to support insulated electrical cables used for power distribution, control, and communication. Cable trays are used as an alternative to open wiring or electrical conduit systems, and are commonly used for cable management in commercial and industrial construction. They are especially useful in situations where changes to a wiring system are anticipated, since new cables can be installed by laying them in the tray, instead of pulling them through a pipe.
According to the National Electrical Code NEC standard of the United States, a cable tray is a unit or assembly of units or sections and associated fittings forming a rigid structural system used to securely fasten or support cables and raceways.
Cable tray systems range from simple to highly customized, so it's a good idea to know what your application requires before you start shopping. Here's a quick rundown of a few basic tray styles and what they work best for.
Types
Several types of tray are used in different applications.
For higher fill rates or heavier cables, WIREMAIDS CABLE-MGR CM20 cable trays make a perfect choice. With support up to 59 pounds per linear foot, they make a great solution for heavier cables and higher fill rates. Designed with carbon steel, they have excellent structural rigidity. With a modular design, no cutting is required, which saves both time, labor, waste and the need for recycling. By using CABLE-MGR cable tray, you no longer have to run a lengthy ground wire and bugs. Designed with continuous grounding and bonding, CABLE-MGR trays allow you to connect and go
A ventilated tray, has openings in the bottom of the tray, allowing some air circulation around the cables, water drainage, and allowing some dust to fall through the tray. Small cables may exit the tray through the ventilation openings, which may be either slots or holes punched in the bottom.
cable trays may have solid covers to protect cables from falling objects, dust, and water. Lighter cable trays LIKE THE CABLE-MGR CM10, are more appropriate in situations where a great number of small cables are used, such as for telephone or computer network cables. These trays may ARE made of wire mesh, called "WIRE BASKET TRAY", AND ARE DESIGNED with side rails to support the cable on either side.
To maintain support of cables at changes of elevation or direction of a tray, a large number of specialized cable tray fittings are made compatible with each style and manufacturer. WITH WIREMAID CABLE-MGR cutting straight sections to make a directional change are a thing of the past. The accessories are pre-configured to attach to the end of the tray to save time and labor, while still maintaining grounding and bonding.
Horizontal elbows change the direction of a tray in the same plane as the bottom of the tray and are made in 30, 45 and 90 degree forms; also known as wire mesh tray 90 degree angle, inside and outside elbows are for changes perpendicular to the tray bottom. These can be in various shapes including tees and crosses.
