We use ice packs and cold presses during the recovery period after your hip and knee replacement surgery. Why do we use them? It's simple. After your surgvery, there is a lot of inflammation around the area of surgery, which leads to swelling and pain, and also stiffness in your joints.
When you use a cold compress, you numb that area, essentially reducing the pain along with the inflammation and swelling and thereby the stiffness also gets reduced. How long should you use the cold compress/ice packs? 3-4 times a day, for about 15 minutes each time.
You should apply it on different parts of the joint you have replaced to give your cold compress a well-rounded appraoch. Once you do that, you will feel better, you can do better excercises, and speed up your recovery.
