The tradition behind the word “sin” carries a clear and condemning cultural definition - a great moral failure, causing suffering to both the sinner and others, which merits a response of judgment and punishment. This belief about and attitude toward sin comes directly from the tradition of Christianity, and it is this precise definition that religion has used around the world to control and manipulate the masses. Perhaps even more damning, this definition of sin has encouraged us to internalize a deep sense of self-loathing, of fundamental corruption, of our own inability to do or be good.
We need to rethink the tradition of sin.
When we return to the real traditional root of this word our culture so often wields like a weapon, we uncover a history steeped in compassion, marked with the poignant traditions of Greek tragedy, and the misrepresentation of a much older word – the Greek hamartia. By exploring the ways we’ve missed the mark on our understanding of hamartia, we discover a new and ancient way of thinking about sin that may not only change the way we consider the actions of others and the state of the world around us, but also transform the lens through which we see ourselves.
Colby Martin remains obstinately hopeful that the church can change the world. Having experienced his fair share of pain and rejection from mainstream Christianity, Colby is awake to the flaws, tragic missteps, and misplaced earnestness that too often define the direction of the church. But the vision and movement of Jesus still moves him - a window into a way of being human that fosters wholeness, and can move communities away from shame into vulnerable, flourishing connection.
