Shopkeepers in İstanbul's Aksaray district who were beaten by a tourist who was also a professional boxer over a bottle of water confessed that they realized they had taken on the wrong guy, saying the tourist seemed to be made of concrete and was not punching them like a human.
Earlier this month a tourist from Ireland who is of Kuwaiti origin and was later identified as Mohammed Fadel Dobbous went to pick up a bottle of water from a shop near his hotel; however, he opened the door of a refrigerator with such force that dozens of water bottles fell to the floor. The owner of the shop was angered and attacked Dobbous with a stick, according to video footage circulating in the social media.
In a show of solidarity, neighboring shopkeepers also began to attack the tourist. According to security camera footage, Dobbous positioned himself as though he were in a ring and fought off the members of the eventual group one by one. After taking a punch to the face, one assailant could barely walk. The shopkeepers sought assistance from members of a crowd that had immediately formed.
Speaking to Show TV, Şenol Palan, the 32-year-old owner of the shop from which the tourist intended to buy a bottle of water, alleged that the tourist attacked them because he refused to sell him alcohol. According to Palan the tourist first asked to buy alcohol, but when Palan said he did not sell alcohol a short dispute took place between them. After some time the tourist came with one of his friends and shook the refrigerator, causing the bottles to fall. According to Palan's version of the story, a fight then broke out and nearby shopkeepers rushed to join him.
“The man was so strong. He was toppling anyone he punched. Then nearby shopkeepers rushed in to help. It was like he was made of stone. He was not punching like a human,” the shopkeeper said.
Palan said the video footage is longer than the clip that has been circulating on social media; however, police seized all the video records of the incident.
Shopkeeper asks for money from reporters to get new teeth
Another shopkeeper, who was hit hard in his face by the tourist, asked for money from reporters so he could get a prosthesis to replace the nine teeth he had lost during the fight. Speaking with reporters via one of his friends, the shopkeeper asked reporters to deposit money to his bank account. The shopkeeper was seen on video falling to the ground instantly after being hit once by the tourist.
A reporter, speaking to the shopkeeper's friend by phone, said the price of a dental prosthesis would usually be TL 25,000, and asked if his all of his friend's teeth were gone. “Yes but we will have the prosthesis costing TL 10,000; the cheaper one. All his teeth are gone, nothing left. Nine teeth gone,” the friend stated.
When asked if he lost all nine teeth after one punch, the friend replied by saying, “Brother, did you not see the man, he is like Mike Tyson.”
