When using mass timber in a building, the general goal in most instances is to expose the timber to the maximum extent possible. However, there are certain instances when the timber needs to be encapsulated, or covered, with other materials such as gypsum wallboard. This video is part 1 of a 2 part series that explores the unique circumstances that require or necessitate encapsulation of mass timber elements. In this part 1 video, the focus is on requirements associated with different construction types, shaft walls and acoustics. Next week’s part 2 video will look at requirements for fire-resistance ratings, exterior walls and concealed spaces.
