I’ve been exploring how far I can push Grease Pencil, brushstrokes, and compositing workflows to blur the line between drawing and 3D.
The process was honestly the most fun part, mixing every stage of the pipeline and letting them evolve together instead of working in strict steps.
I started by locking the lighting early, then:
built stylised textures using the normal map trick
added brushstrokes only on key forms, where the eye needs guidance
layered Kuwahara, displacement, and masks in compositing to decide where to keep detail and where to simplify, very similar to how you’d approach a real painting
Grease Pencil was used a lot to:
create halation around shadows
paint light and shadow directly where geometry felt too heavy
simplify shapes instead of adding more detail
At the end, I pushed the compositing to get closer to a concept art / speed-painting feel, with a slightly cinematic touch. I also animated Grease Pencil strokes and brushstrokes using noise to introduce a bit of controlled chaos.
I’m currently looking for freelance or short-term work in:
stylised 3D
NPR / painterly pipelines
concept-driven visuals for games, animation, or advertising
