Short Recap: Narconomics is the analysis of the illegal drub business the way that one would analyze a large corporation or industry segment. The estimated $300 billion annual revenue would be the 40th largest economy in the world, but the numbers and information you hear on the news is nearly all wrong. Despite the countless dollars spent by the United States and other nations in combatting drugs, there seems to have been little effect.
The price of cocaine is essentially the same as it was 20 years ago, and the world demand is stable. However, the murder rate in Mexico has leaped especially in border towns meanwhile the drug business has begun to move locations. This is a fascinating look at the economic factors including franchising, corporate take overs, brand recognition and online sales as they relate to the drug business
Application to Business: First, I think I’m doing something wrong, haha. It is amazing how misunderstood the drug business truly is by governments. Like many failures of governments, the impact is not being felt by those intended and the farmers are being squeeze while the narcos are thriving. This reminds me that when large issues arise you can never jump at the simplest solution because that often has unintended consequences. Instead you have to dig down to the root of the problem.
Application to Life: One of the lessons of the book was regarding the tendency to confuse prohibition with control as it relates to drugs. However, as a parent that makes me think about how I go about raising my kids. I will have to be conscious of whether I am just banning something or if I am actually controlling it. There is an effect in the drug business where one country squeezes it like a balloon and it pops up somewhere else. I certainly want to make sure I don’t make the same mistakes.
