Kyle has Duchenne-type muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is characterized by progressive loss of muscle strength, eventual loss of ambulation and of respiratory muscle strength. Kyle resides in a community setting despite 24-hour breathing support. He uses a home ventilator with a breathing pipe. A tracheostomy is not required as long as Kyle is able to secure the breathing pipe with his lips and initiate and accept a ventilator delivered breath.
