Uncompahgre Peak, elevation 14,318’, is the highest peak in the San Juan Mountains, also one of the easiest to climb. If one can drive to the upper Nellie Creek Trailhead, the total stats becomes a moderate 8 miles with 3000’ elevation gain. When we did this hike on 7/5/2025, the wild flowers were near peak condition and the meadows were super green as well, making the approach quite idyllic and beautiful. We started around 5:30am and finished by 11:30am, and had the summit to ourselves for a good 30 min. On the way back we saw many hikers heading up. This is my 57th distinct 14er summit and my wife’s 33rd, and it ranks as one of the most enjoyable 14er hikes we have done
