Today, I’m baking directly from my great-grandmother’s cookbook—a fragile, time-worn page carried from Czechoslovakia and passed down through generations. This sweet nut roll recipe is more than food; it’s memory, heritage, and the quiet love of women who cooked before us.
The pages are stained, the measurements are old-fashioned, and the instructions assume you already know what you’re doing—just like she did. I’ve kept this recipe as close to the original as possible, honoring the hands that wrote it.
✨ Great-Grandmother’s Sweet Nut Rolls (Czechoslovakia) ✨
FOUNDATION DOUGH
• 1 cup milk or water
• 3 Tbsp sugar
• 1 tsp salt
• 2 Tbsp shortening
• 1 cake or packet yeast
• 2 cups lukewarm water
• 3–4 cups flour
• Melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions:
Scald milk or boil water. Place sugar, salt, and shortening in a bowl and pour hot liquid over ingredients. Let cool to about 80°. Soften yeast in lukewarm water and add to mixture. Gradually add flour until dough is stiff enough to handle. Knead until elastic on a floured board. Place in greased bowl, grease top, and let rise.
Divide dough into three parts. Roll each into a 10-inch circle. Spread with desired filling and roll up like a jelly roll. Place rolls side by side in a greased 7x10x2-inch pan. Brush tops and sides with melted butter. Let rise until doubled.
Bake at 375°F for 30–35 minutes. Brush again with butter. Cool on racks. Frost lightly if desired.
Yield: about 30 servings. Rolls may be frozen (do not frost before freezing).

• 2 cups finely ground nuts
• 1 cup milk
• ½ cup sugar
• ½ tsp vanilla
• 1 tsp cinnamon
Mix all ingredients. Cook for 5 minutes. Cool and spread on dough.

APRICOT FILLING
• 1 lb dried apricots
• 1 cup water
• 1½ cups sugar
Cook apricots in water until most of the water is gone and mash. Add sugar and simmer 5 minutes. Cool and spread.

PRUNE FILLING
• 1 package pitted prunes
• 1 cup water
• 2 cups sugar
Cook prunes with water, drain, mash, add sugar, and simmer 5 minutes. Cool and spread.
