The cracks appear in the earth before anything else — spreading across the mortal world like a warning that the underworld has decided it is done being below, and the dead stirring in their tombs is the opening omen before Bradley Cooper's Hades shatters the gates entirely and raises his skeleton legion from the corroded depths, black obsidian armor and an iron crown and dark flame flickering around his hands with the cold commanding certainty of a god who has spent an eternity resentful of the arrangement that put his brother in the sky and him below it. Keanu Reeves plays Zeus with full white beard and white hair and a powerfully built frame beneath bronze-gold armor with lightning-bolt etchings, eyes burning electric-blue when the power moves through him, the lightning-bolt spear crackling with storm energy and a deep-blue cape moving in the weather that follows him everywhere he goes — the specific presence of a king who has ruled long enough to know that war is coming before the gates break but who will not flinch when they do. Charlize Theron's Athena stands at his side in silver-grey plated armor with owl-motif engravings and a crimson-trimmed cloak and the calm calculating expression of a goddess who fights through strategy rather than rage, spear and round shield and the complete absence of doubt about which side of this war is correct. The skeleton army pours out of the cracks in the earth in corroded black armor with hollow sockets burning dim black-fire and ancient notched swords, some mounted on skeletal horses, a tide of the dead marching on the mortal world and Olympus simultaneously. Zeus hurls lightning into the horde and the arc crawls across his weapon and armor and the battlefield ignites and Athena cuts through ranks while the war breaks across ruined terrain. Then the two brothers face each other directly — thunder and dark flame, the oldest argument between two gods who were never going to settle it any other way. The title hits on the lightning strike.

Nine to eleven hours on this one. Building the personal weight of the Zeus-Hades confrontation beneath the scale of an entire underworld war took serious tonal discipline. Multiple tools, multiple full passes. Every electric arc and every corroded skeleton sword earned its place.
