Описание: The Rwanda-backed M23 rebels entered the key eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Uvira late on Dec. 10, AFP reported citing sources. The militia's fighters entered the strategic border town at the gates of Burundi from the north, the report said citing military and security sources.
The attack occurred after US and European powers urged the M23 to "immediately halt" its offensive and for Rwanda to pull its troops out of the eastern DRC.
Uvira has served as the headquarters of the Kinshasa-appointed government in South Kivu after the province's capital, Bukavu, fell to M23 in February.
The renewed violence has undermined an agreement aiming to end the conflict brokered by US President Donald Trump. The peace deal was signed on Dec. 4 in Washington by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame.
