I've been on Moonshot's $19/month plan for three months alongside Claude and Codex, so this is the honest answer.

Kimi K3 is an open-weight model that trades blows with Claude Opus 5 on the intelligence, coding and agentic benchmarks, and it's cheaper on every axis: $3 in / $15 out per million tokens versus $5 / $25 for Opus 5, and $10 / $50 for Fable 5. At $19 a month you get noticeably more coding than a $20 Claude Pro plan.

But it isn't a clean swap. The $19 tier caps you at a 256k context window even though the model supports 1M, so long sessions compact early. K3 is slow. The tooling is buggier, the servers have been overloaded since launch, and demand got so high Moonshot briefly stopped selling subscriptions.

The move I actually recommend: Kimi Code runs on Anthropic-compatible endpoints, so you can drive it from inside Claude Code. Plan with Opus 5, delegate the bulk coding to Kimi, audit with Opus 5 at the end. Two $20 subscriptions, $40 total, still far cheaper than jumping to the $100 or $200 tier.
