How to present the Sandpaper letters (MONTESSORI Language LESSON)

Material:
The letters of the alphabet (lower case cursive) cut out of sandpaper and each mounted on a separate thick card or on wood. The consonants are mounted on pink or red and the vowels on blue.

Presentation:
Invite a child to the language area
Introduce the activity
Have the child carry the box to the table
Let him know that when we work with sandpaper letters we have to wash our hands and sensitize our finger. Go to the sink counter to wash and sensitize your hands
Invite the child to wash and sensitize his hands.
Go back to the table and sit down. Place the box on top right corner and face back
Take 3 letters. First choose 3 contrasting letters (in sound and in shape) : 1 vowel, 2 consonant for example: a,c,m
Placing the letters Face down in front of the box
Isolate the vowel in front of the child, Point out that you using two fingers (middle and index) to trace hold the board with left hand and trace the letter with right hand, two fingers, continuously
After tracing Say the letter sound
Look at the child
She might repeat the sound
Do this three times or more
Invite the child to repeat (trace and say the sound). When the child finish, place the letter face down on the left side
Do the same with the other two
Say: ,”Let’s work with all of them”
Continue with three period lesson:
Ask him to point Trace “c”, trace “m”
Isolate one and say: “Can you trace this?” “What does it sound?”
Emphasizing to trace them
If the lesson is successful with the first three letters and the child still interested
Invite him to work with three more
When he is done, have him to put the box back on the shelf
Note:
All vowels are introduce in the first five lessons
When introducing more letter on another day, review the previous letters that the child has learned or at least the letters the day before
If the interest of the child is hit at the right moments, the child can learn all the letters in two weeks. Give the presentation everyday.
When tracing you need to emphasize the start and direction where your hands are moving (Put your two finger at the starting point and pause before continue tracing)
To the child you can point out as many times as you need. If the child keep making mistakes, we can trace the letter again or put the child hand on top of your hand.
Make the sound after you finish tracing, so the movement is isolated from the sound.
Say the sound very clearly and in the correct way with no other sound attached.
Choose contrasting letters for presentation.
Keep a record of the letters what the child knows.
