This might sound as the ultimate selection to make in Kyoto!
We have visited the Golden and Silver Pavilions, 2 famous touristic places in Kyoto.
But I truly recommend you really take the time to appreciate the place and also know more about the history of both venues.
Here is a quick overview of 2 of the most beautiful pavilions in Japan:
The "Kinkakuji", or "Golden Pavilion" in English was built in the 14th century for the Shogun Ashikaga and covered with thousands of gold leaves that gave it its unique appearance. Please pay attention to the silhouette of the pavilion in the waters of the lake right at its feet.
After Ashikaga passed away, the Kinkakuji was transformed into a temple. The inside of the pavilion is unfortunately not open to the public, but the walk through its surrounding gardens is one of the best experiences in Kyoto. It is best to come here in the morning and evening right when the sun shines and reflects on the small lake surrounding the pavilion! Prepare your smartphones and cameras for some amazing pictures and videos!
But where there is gold, there has to be silver as well! In Gion, the famous geisha district we have talked about in one of our previous videos, don't miss the Silver Pavilion (Ginkaku-ji)! Its refined decorations and Zen-inspired pond gardens are the very reason it became famous. If you have the opportunity to go to Kyoto in mid-July, you can attend the Gion Matsuri, one of the most important festivals in Japan.
