Описание: SAPS have to cough up nearly R3,4million to a man who they kept locked up for nearly two years and eight months in a wrongful arrest case.

A court found Mdunyiswa Mtolo was "maliciously arrested" by the police and has been awarded almost R3.4 million(R3 367 200) in damages.

He spent nearly two years and eight months at New Prison in Pietermaritzburg where he was humiliated, strip searched, extorted by other prisoners.

Judge Rob Mossop of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg said: "The malice that was found to exist is intensely upsetting. When those that are required to protect society prey on it then society is in trouble.”
