The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland welcomes Tom Hartley, author of “Balmoral Cemetery: The History of Belfast, Written in Stone” who explores the history of the lost Belfast Presbyterian meeting houses.
From their first meeting House built in 1668 until the present, one hundred and one Belfast Presbyterian congregations have built 167 Meeting Houses/ Churches. Since that first meeting house was built, Presbyterian congregations displayed a prodigious capacity and flexibility for the development and building of new meeting houses/churches. The presentation by Tom Hartley charts the loss of many of these meeting houses in the process unearthing the story of presbyterian congregations that have disappeared from sight, there meeting houses demolished and their story lost to the grind of history. The presentation ends with an update on the continuous closure of Presbyterian meeting houses/ churches in Belfast.
