ABOUT THIS PAINTING: This is story of two paintings…by two friends… working side by side.
In 1869 Claude Monet and his good friend, Pierre-Auguste Renoir spent the summer painting outdoor scenes along the River Seine.
One of the locations they chose was the La Grenouillère, a middle-class resort on the outskirts of Paris which boasted a spa, a boating establishment and a floating cafe.
Pleasure boating on the Seine became a passion of Parisians in the 19th century, flocking from the city to enjoy activities in country.
Both Monet and Renoir were dead poor at the time, and they reasoned middle class patrons of La Grenouillère would be interested paintings of the pastimes of the bourgeoisie.
Art historians find these two works fascinating, both representing the same movement Impressionism, both similar in style. And though painted from same exact location, in a direct one-to-comparison, there are very clear contrasts.
The depictions are similar. There’s the gangplank on the left leading to what is called Flower Pot Island, a sort of outdoor lounge for patrons, and the gangplank on the right leading to the floating cafe. In the foreground is a mooring for row boats.
Yet, the differences in the works are real as each artist’s fingerprints. Monet’s interest lies in color, light and form. You can see it in the vibrancy of the water, the reflection of the sky. The bold impressionist shapes of the trees in the distance. It’s a festival of color. His rendering of the patrons are sketchy, as they are incidental to his higher objectives.
Renoir on the other hand pays special attention to the details. Compare the paintings; the woodwork of the boats, the individual leaves on the tree in the foreground, the details of the clothing, even the type of the signage on the cafe balusters. Also Renoir’s color palette isn’t as rich, but more pastel.
The two friends painted other perspectives with similar results at La Grenouillère
Though both are considered Impressions, Renoir could no more paint a these haystacks, than Monet could capture a this luncheon with friends.
Their shared dreams of monetary success would elude them for several years to come. In the meantime, it was the owner of La Grenouillère, Alphonse Fournaise, who supported by purchasing their works.
