Fernie, British Columbia, offers a buffet of fishy waters that host native Cutthroat trout, Bull trout, and Mountain whitefish. Though exotic probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind when British Columbia, Canada, is mentioned, Hilary Hutcheson begs to differ. Hutcheson grew up in Montana’s Flathead Valley, and as soon as she was old enough to drive, she remembers feeling the pull of the North—specifically, Fernie and its surrounding rivers. Owner and guide of Elk River guiding Company, Paul Samycia shows Hutcheson some of these rivers, including the company’s namesake, which runs right through Fernie. Outside of town, there’s the Bull River, and a little farther still are the Wigwam and Bow rivers.
