In November 1998, Shandelle Maycock trusted someone she knew from church: Harrel Braddy. What began as an uncomfortable acquaintance turned into a violent nightmare when Braddy attacked Shandelle inside her apartment, choking her unconscious multiple times before kidnapping both her and her five-year-old daughter, Quantisha “Candy” Maycock. After the two attempted to escape from a moving car, Braddy forced Shandelle into the trunk, drove her to a remote area, and left her for dead. She survived. Her daughter did not.
For nearly two days, Braddy refused to tell investigators where Candy was, deliberately misleading search teams while evidence mounted against him. When he finally spoke, he led detectives to Alligator Alley... a desolate stretch of South Florida known for canals filled with alligators. There, he admitted he had left the little girl alive near the water, knowing she would likely die. Candy’s body was later found floating in a canal. The medical examiner confirmed she suffered blunt force trauma and alligator bites while still alive.
In 2007, Braddy was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death by an 11–1 jury vote. But that sentence was overturned a decade later due to changes in Florida law requiring unanimous jury decisions. Now, more than 25 years after Candy’s death, Braddy is back in court under new rules that allow a death sentence without unanimity. At 76 years old, he faces the same question again and so does the jury: what does justice look like, decades later?
