The Nobel Prize in Literature for 1948 was awarded to T. S. Eliot. This is a detailed analysis of his poem The Waste Land, on the occasion of the centennial of its publication in book form. According to some critics and historians, 1922 marks the birth of modernism, primarily because of the publication of The Waste Land and James Joyce's Ulysses.
