In 1847, General Winfield Scott made one of the boldest moves in American military history.
After landing his army at Veracruz, Scott marched inland toward Mexico City—through disease-ridden lowlands, steep mountains, and heavily defended positions.
At Cerro Gordo, American forces found a way around the Mexican defenses. Then Scott took an even greater risk: he stopped relying on the long supply line back to Veracruz and continued deeper into enemy territory.
The campaign would lead through Chapultepec and ultimately into Mexico City itself.
An amphibious landing.
A mountain flanking maneuver.
A dangerous march into enemy territory.
And when the Mexican-American War was over, the map of North America would never look the same again.
